چکیده

Methods Observational study performed in a 17 beds medicalsurgical ICU. Time of study was 14 months. Consecutive mechanically ventilated patients with COPD and/or cardiac failure were included. The variables analyzed were age, sex, ICU diagnosis, APACHE II at admission in ICU, fluid balance, ICU length of stay, tracheotomy, rate of reintubation. We distinguish two strategies of extubation based in physician ́s criteria according with or without the use of NIV after planned extubation.

Sequential invasive-noninvasive mechanical ventilation weaning strategy for patients after tracheostomy.

BACKGROUND Because the continuity and integrity of the trachea are likely damaged to some extent after tracheostomy, the implementation of sequential ventilation has certain difficulties, and sequential invasive-noninvasive ventilation on patients after tracheostomy is less common in practice. The present study aimed to investigate the feasibility of invasive-noninvasive sequential weaning stra...

Noninvasive ventilation as a weaning strategy for mechanical ventilation in adults with respiratory failure: a Cochrane systematic review.

BACKGROUND Noninvasive ventilation has been studied as a means of reducing complications among patients being weaned from invasive mechanical ventilation. We sought to summarize evidence comparing noninvasive and invasive weaning and their effects on mortality. METHODS We identified relevant randomized and quasirandomized trials through searches of databases, conference proceedings and grey l...

Noninvasive ventilation to shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation.

Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) successfully treats primary respiratory failure in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute pulmonary edema, and, in some patients, hypoxemic respiratory failure. Increasingly clinicians have applied NIV in an effort to shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation by facilitating weaning and preventing or treating post-extubation respiratory failure. R...

Successful Extubation After Weaning Failure by Noninvasive Ventilation in Patients With Neuromuscular Disease: Case Series

OBJECTIVE To report successful cases of extubation from invasive mechanical ventilation at our institution using pulmonary rehabilitation consisting of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in neuromuscular patients with experience of reintubation. METHODS Patients who experienced extubation failure via the conventional weaning strategy but afterwards had extubation success via NIV were studied retro...

Noninvasive mechanical ventilation during the weaning process: facilitative, curative, or preventive?

To avoid the complications associated with endotracheal intubation, noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) has been proposed in the management of ventilator weaning in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) of various etiologies. Several studies have been performed to assess the benefit of NPPV in various weaning strategies, including permitting early extubation in patients who...
